N Gleason Commons originated in 1920 as Riverside Park, a 315-acre public amenity along the Little Calumet River. During the park's early years under the leadership of U.S. Steel Super and park board president William P. Gleason (for whom the park  was renamed in 1933), the board segregated Riverbank into south and north sections divided past the river.

South Gleason Park, principally consisting of an 18-hole links course and a George Maher-designed club, served white Gary residents, patc North Gleason marked the get-go publically funded parking area for African Americans. The separation pointed to an ever-increasing social watershed among the residents of Gary.

Although North Gleason Park's location inside the river's flood plain was never nonsuch, and its financing ne'er equaled that of South Gleason, the park offered athletic fields, clay tennis courts, an alfresco swimming syndicate, playground, picnic pavilions, and a walking course. Gary's African Terra firma citizens embraced the space as their own. During the Depression, the Works Advance Administration busy residents to help with construction and landscaping projects in the parking area, providing day care services for workers, along with activities like croquet, baseball, and draughts for older residents.

North Gleason's main draw was a 9-cakehole golf naturally where play meandered through marshy parkland. In 1949, golfers at the park formed the Equality-Makers, a structur founded around mutual enjoyment of the sport. They promoted competition past hosting territorial tournaments, but their impact went far on the far side the bet on.

The Par-Makers developed a jr. golf curriculum, contributed to a scholarship fund, and donated clip to support local causes within the black-market residential area. The group also chipped away at the exclusionary policies of Southbound Gleason Golf Course. In 1951, the Par-Makers invited professional Boxer Joe Louis to their golf tournament, leverage his national celebrity to convince the Gary Park Board to allow play in In the south Gleason.

The glazed roofing tile walls of the main hall remain hidden behind four decades of pugilism posters, paper articles, and photographs.

Deferred maintenance, combined with the challenges of a flat roof, has rendered the building almost unusable. Buckets catch drips from the leaking roof and regulate thrives in the damp interior. The building's kettle is shot.
