Emojis Tumblr Disney Drawings Easy Lion King

I did a previous post on this back in August, but for the sake of those who have recently discovered my blog (thank you for that!), I'm re-posting it here. Let's hope it can do as well as "Descendants", but I'm just not sure. It doesn't seem to have gotten as much merchandising and publicity as "Descendants", but then I think it's targeting a much younger crowd, so that may be why. Teen fans of "Descendants" are capable of buying more merchandise on their own while the youngsters must rely on mommy and daddy to buy them stuff.

And now for that post. If any of you watch and want to share your opinions on the bottom of this post, feel free.

Can a Return of "The Lion King" Recreate "Descendants" Mania?

August 21, 2015

Disney is currently riding the glorious wave of success after "Descendants" set TV viewing records. I have to wonder if even Disney predicted just how well the movie, and all the subsequent merchandise, would take off. More "Descendants" is already in the works and not looking to slow down anytime soon.

But… Disney has another program they've been working on for four years. They can only hope to score big twice within six months. The new prime time, short film will debut on Disney and Disney, Jr. in November and will be a sort of spin-off of the 1994 movie, "The Lion King".  Actually, you may or may not be aware that there was a sequel to the movie (technically there were almost two; "The Lion King 1 & 1/2″ and "The Lion King 2″), which was released straight to video in 1998 (the latter is often common among the successful Disney animated movies). I believe this spin-off will act as if the previous sequels never existed.

"LION KING" TRIVIA! The baboon witch-doctor in the original movie was named "Rafiki". Rafiki is Swahili and means "Friend".

"The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar" will introduce us to Kion, one of the sons of Simba. He and his various animal friends must find ways to keep the peace in the vicinity of Pride Rock. The only members of the original cast (that I'm aware of) will be James Earl Jones, who will revive his role as Simba's father Mufasa's ghost. Ernie Sabella, who played Pumbaa in the original, will return as well. Simba and Nala will be back, but voiced by Rob Lowe and Gabrielle Union, and Kion will be played by 12-year-old Max Charles, who already has a very successful career under his belt. Both Nathan Lane and his alter-ego, Timon, are absent from the cast list, so I guess Pumbaa is flying solo these days.

Anticipating the success of "The Lion Guard", Disney already has a series in the works which will be begin in early 2016. In addition to the original movie and merchandise success of "The Lion King", there has been a Saturday morning cartoon, a popular show at Animal Kingdom, and of course, the wildly successful Broadway musical. I went to see the musical at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood two years ago and it was AMAZING! If you ever get the chance, go see it. Even NON-Disney people will love it. But then, who doesn't love Disney?! That's positively un-American! Disney haters are just an urban legend; to keep badly behaved children from acting up at the Disney parks. "Careful kid, or we'll feed you to the Anti-Disney trolls living under the Haunted Mansion!"

"LION KING" SECRET! There is a giant "Lion King" play area at the Art of Animation Resort in Walt Disney World. Below, I'm standing under the famous log from "Hakuna Matata". Scar and the hyenas are there, too. There are three additional giant play areas at the resort: "The Little Mermaid", "Finding Nemo" and "Cars".

Seriously though, Disney is trying desperately to keep today's youth interested. You wouldn't think it would be that difficult with the over-population of the earth, many of which are after Gen-X kids. But Disney has to compete with the ever-growing popularity of tablets and cell phones everywhere. Kids are more interested in music and social networking than sitting still to watch TV, although "Descendants" kind of blew that argument out of the water. Disney feels that classic successes, like "The Lion King", will not only attract the youth of today, but their parents who remember the original. Bringing back Scar would have worked on me!  Alas, it's not to be. The two most obvious differences between "Descendants" and "The Lion Guard" are that "Descendants" attracted a wide variety of age groups: adolescents, teens, and everything up to include even Jurassic Disney kids, like me. Just based on the "The Lion Guard" teaser, it seems to be directed at a specific, and young, audience. Much as I love "The Lion King", I can almost certainly say I won't watch it. The other difference is that "The Lion King" is animated. That may be a key point in making or breaking audiences who tune in to check it out.

I have no doubt that there will be some degree of success with the new movie and series, I just don't think it can possibly follow that of the "Descendants". Disney execs can only cross their fingers and hope!
